Beaver Creek, located outside of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, has a happy bunch of black bears that we know fairly well. Still, identifying specific black bears within a given locale may be prove to be tricky at times.
The following short video clips discuss a few tips on how to distinguish individual black bears within a given black bear community in night lighting, which often times complicates the issue of black bear identification.
Black bear identification often leads to close calls - especially if images acquired are taken in bad "snout lighting." The following videos describe, in part, a black bear identification check list one can follow to attempt to identify, or otherwise distinguish, specific black bears inhabiting a given area.
As the song in the previous video indicates, when it comes to black bear identification, it ain't no shame to get one or two bear identification calls wrong. The following videos show several Beaver Creek Bear identification "close calls."
For bear identification, physical characteristics to observe and take note of include snout coloring, fur coloring, male-versus-female characteristics, tummy-to-ground-space (TGS), four-paw-on-ground (FPG) height, standing height, paw size, head size, etc.
Behavioral characteristics may take one or more viewings to ascertain...but can be an entertaining exercise. For instance, when it comes to the Beaver Creek Bears, Slick is very passive and tries not irritate the dominant male ("The Big Guy").
Conversely, Huey goes out of his way to irritate The Big Guy constantly, while simultaneously being very friendly with all of the other Beaver Creek wildlife. As a result of Huey's issue with dominant male bear authority, Huey is routinely one broken bear. For instance, the following videos show Huey shortly after a run-in with a larger male. Luckily, male black bear skirmish scars often quickly heal, and Huey is no exception to that general rule.
